After a partial or overall laryngectomy, the swiming habits you had actually befre the surgical treatment must alter.

In this email we will share some beneficial suggestions how to adjust to your brand-new truth as a neck breather.

Swimming or getting into water can be really hazardous for laryngectomees.
Once the stoma is under water, water can enter into the trachea and the lungs leading to drowning.

This can also trigger aspiration pneumonia.

It may be safe to pitch in shallow and calm water as long as the water level is kept at a safe distance below the stoma to enable breathing and avoid goal.

Some laryngectomees take brief swims or get under the water for a couple of seconds after occluding their stoma with a finger.

Some wear a baseplate and seal it with an improvised locked HME.

There may be emergency situation situations where a laryngectomee is forced to get into the water.
